December 09, 2013 – Comsis improve their high-speed vehicular communication platform.
The initial version of the the high-speed vehicular communication platform based on the MimoKit I was successfully tested as reported in a previous news release. Although adequate for Traffic Regulation applications, the effective coverage of the embedded 802.11p wireless modem was too short for Green Light-Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA) applications.
Additional works were thus conducted and increased the coverage to above 500 m. During the process, the platform was upgraded with a MimoKit II hardware, antenna setups were reworked and tests were run in various environments (circuits, parking lot, city).
The following pictures illustrate a GLOSA application setup implemented by Valeo: A traffic light beams its phase information through the 802.11p modem embedded in the MimoKit II platform. This information is collected by the car on the go, and the recommended speed range is displayed on the screen of a smart phone after analysis.
This test took place on the circuit Beltoise in Trappes, France. The traffic light position is marked by the green dot. The red dot marks is located roughly on the extreme range.
The above picture is an in-car view when the vehicle is at the red mark (>500 m ahead of the traffic light). A speed of 20 up to 55 km/h is recommended (green range). A higher speed will cause the vehicle to reach the traffic light whilst it is red.
The above picture was taken close to the traffic light, which has just turned green.
Platform features
- Licensed ITS band operation (5.85 GHz – 5.925 GHz)
- 7 available channels with 10 MHz bandwidth
- Ethernet connectivity
- and much more
Platform availability
The IEEE 802.11p IP is now available on the Comsis development boards MimoKit I and MimoKit II. These kits include a motherboard and RF daughter cards, and are ready to use.
This work was funded by Region Ile-de-France via the Co_Drive cooperative R&D project. Thanks to Valeo and Sopemea for their support and collaboration during tests.
